Some histological changes in chronic bronchitis and asthma.

groups was hypertonicity of the bronchial wall, which was frequent in the asthmatics and absent in the chronic bronchitics. Mucus was scanty and viscous in the asthmatics and more abundant and watery in the chronic bronchitics. Hypersecretion of mucus occurred in both groups. In asthma the mucous hyperplasia affected chiefly the goblet cells. In chronic bronchitis the deeper bronchial glands were affected as well as the goblet cells. In asthma the mucus stained predominantly with the periodic-acid Schiff technique, and was thus presumed to contain much neutral mucopolysaccharide. In chronic bronchitis the mucus was strongly alcian blue positive and was thought to consist largely of acid mucopolysaccharide. Thickening of the basement membrane

Bronchial biopsy in chronic bronchitis and asthma.
Chronic bronchitis is responsible for a greater annual mortality in Great Britain than any other single respiratory disease, and its incidence is far higher in this country than anywhere else in the world (Oswald, 1958), yet relatively few comprehensive studies of the pathogenesis of the condition have been published. Considerable attention has been paid recently to the factor of infection in c...
متن کاملRight Ventricular Hypertrophy and the Small Pulmonary Arteries in Chronic Lung Disease.
Changes in the small muscular arteries of the lungs can be found in many forms of chronic lung disease. In primary pulmonary hypertension a characteristic form of medial hypertrophy occurs (Harris and Heath, 1962). In the massive form of coalworkers' pneumoconiosis there occurs a progressive stenosing arterial lesion which is not seen in the simple form of the disease (Thomas and James, 1958). ...

Asthma is characterized by narrowing of the airways in response to various stimuli and the presence of airway inflammation of varying degree. Unlike the more fixed or permanent airflow obstruction typical of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and bronchiolitis, the airflow obstruction associated with asthma may be completely reversible [see 14:III Chronic Obstructiv...

INDICATIONS Tulobuterol is indicated for prophylaxis and control of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, bronchiectasis, tracheobronchitis with emphysema and other bronchospastic disorders and conditions characterized by bronchoconstriction. Because oral tulobuterol is long acting, it is ideally suited for routine maintenance therapy i...
متن کاملEffect of salbutamol and ipratropium bromide on airway calibre and bronchial reactivity in asthma and chronic bronchitis.
Bronchial reactivity to agonists such as histamine is seen in both chronic bronchitis and asthma, two conditions with different pathological changes in the airways. Salbutamol, when given acutely, reduces bronchial reactivity in patients with asthma, but the mechanism has not been clarified. To determine whether the effect of salbutamol depends on the pathological changes underlying the increas...
